This week, we are here to help you get to know the man behind it all a little bit better. Keep reading for a sneak peak into our cockpit: meet owner, pilot, and photographer Mitch Bowers!
1. How did you get started in the aerial photography business?
I have been a photographer since high school. Once I completed my flight training, I started shooting from the airplane. I had friends ask me to get shots of their houses, aerial landscapes, downtown, etc… 15 years later here we are. In 2016 alone, I flew over 200 hours, 11 states, and more than 600 sites.
2. What is your favorite part about your career?
I get to do two of my favorite passions, flying and photography.
3. How do you operate the camera and the plane at the same time?
When people ask me this, I always say I fly with my right hand and shoot with my left hand. The aircraft is set up at certain power and trim settings for the conditions. I am only looking thru the camera for a few seconds at a time. I constantly switch between looking outside, thru the viewfinder, and at the aircraft instruments.
4. Can you tell us about one of your favorite projects that you have photographed?
Air to air photography is always a favorite. Picture two aircraft flying in formation very close together at well over 100 knots, two pilots, and me telling them what I need them to do. There is a lot of coordination and skill involved.
5. When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Fireman, motorcycle racer, pro cyclist, etc…
6. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Spending time with my amazing wife and cycling.
7. What is something that few people know about you?
I am constantly asked what I really do for a living.
8. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I would love to go scuba diving from a sea plane in Micronesia!
9. What is something you wish everyone knew about your career?
That it is extremely specialized and takes years of experience. It’s not just flying and taking pictures.
